I worked to visually show how the hysteric and often opportunistic finger-pointing that defined the Salem witch trials was built upon a human fear of the unknown and an inability to square with their miserable circumstances - diseased animals, wars with mysterious natives, and constant admonishments that the devil would corrupt the weak.
Detail of the witches and familiars that accent the main illustration. I worked them up in a woodcut style similar to those found in contemporary prints.
